The book of Esther, as we have it in the Hebrew language in the canon of the Old Testament, is one of the most remarkable and instructive writings of ancient Persia.
We obtain from it an insight into the inner life of the royal harem. It makes us better acquainted with King Xerxes, and gives us the original names of his princes and warriors. In spite of its specific Jewish-national motive, it brings us into contact with the political and religious movements that take place in the great empire.
